Watch recording of ICAHD UK Webinar - Palestinians in '48 - Awad Abdelfattah - Thursday 22 January During the webinar, Awad examined the oppression of Palestinian citizens of Israel and identified them as the first victims of Israel’s settler colonial agenda. Since 7th October 2023, Israel has intensified its mechanisms of control inside the Green Line—criminalizing political expression, repressing civilian institutions, restricting economic development and facilitating social disintegration through organised crime. He came to the webinar having been in Sakhnin that day to participate in the largest ever march of Palestinians in ’48. It followed a general strike that had been called because of the growing organised crime that is resulting in Palestinians moving away which is exactly what Israel wants to happen. However, Awad was hopeful and said that they are entering a new phase in their struggle. Currently, many Palestinians are just trying to survive but they will emerge stronger than ever. He believes that the One Democratic State Campaign is the only body with the vision for dismantling Israel’s settler-colonial regime to then be replaced with a single democratic state based on equality, return, restitution and a shared sovereignty. Awad Abdelfattah is a political writer and the former general secretary of the Balad political party which aims to transform the state of Israel into a democracy for all its citizens, irrespective of national or ethnic identity. Awad lives in the Galilee and is the Co-founder of the One Democratic State Campaign. He spoke at ICAHD UK’s annual conference in September 2023 (watch from 21.34 to 60.10), has participated in previous webinars and has often briefed international participants during ICAHD’s extended study tour programme.
