"On Sunday the Israeli police raided the Educational Bookshop in East Jerusalem, a place known and beloved by people the world over, trashed it, destroyed and confiscated books and arrested its owners, Mahmoud (in picture below) and Ahmed Muna. They are being brought before a judge as I write on as-yet unspecified charges. "Morad Muna, Mahmoud and Ahmed's brother, narrates: "They went through the books with Google Translate and everything they didn't like, they took," narrates Morad Mona, Mahmoud’s brother, "They even came across the Haaretz newspaper with the picture of the kidnapped and asked what it was and said it was incitement. They took every book that has a Palestinian flag on it. "The Educational Bookshop hosted an event with the One Democratic State Campaign just last week, in which I spoke with several Palestinian colleagues. "Ten days ago (I just learned), the police also raided another Arabic-language bookstore in East Jerusalem, Alquds Bookshop. Its owner, Hisham Iquermawy, remains in detention. "We must mobilize around the Muna brothers and the attack on free speech and thought that their bookshop represents. I am on my way now to the court." ‐------------------ "Update: Mahmoud & Ahmed, who have been held under hard conditions, are to be detained for another day. The police took every book that had a Palestinian flag or colors on the cover in accordance with government policy that prohibits any display of a national Palestinian presence in East Jerusalem - in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention. "European diplomats showed up in court, but Europe does nothing to protect the Palestinians or their rights. "As Israel hurls towards the normalization of its apartheid regime, the green light from the Americans (of BOTH parties) to do whatever is necessary to break Palestinian resistance is entering its final phase of violent repression: pacification. And any vehicles of critical thought, analysis and political engagement on the part of the Palestinians, from universities (EVERY university and library in Gaza was destroyed) to bookshops are being targeted.
