As we were talking, we heard cries and frantic yelling across the major highway (also built on Ata's family land) by the entrance to the settlement. We saw an Israeli army truck speeding away and a young Palestinian man running away from the settlement into the oncoming traffic. His name is Murad (I decided not to post his picture) and he is mentally disabled. Still, he knew the danger of being by a place filled with armed settlers, the guard post at the entrance being manned by soldiers and security personnel. Even his running away and yelling made him a target. Ata quickly ran out into the highway and brought him to safety. It turns out he was taken by the army from his home in a village about 40kms/25 miles away in the middle of the night, brought in handcuffs to a local army base, where he was harassed throughout the night, then dumped at entrance to Kiryat Arba. The cries we heard were his trauma and fears of the Jews in the settlement, the traffic and just his disorientated, alone in an unknown and scary environment.

The ending is good (if you ignore the permanent terror and trauma). Ata contacted his family, gave him money for a bus home and then we took him to the bus stop, from where he could get home. But what of the dozens of such mini-events happening each day to a traumatized and vulnerable population, where no Ata emerges from his field to save the day and parents live in constant fear for their children.

"Day 354 … Let that sink in. 76 years and longer … Let that sink in. A war not only on Gaza. A war not only on the Palestinian people. A war on the traditions, culture, on the very idea of Palestine itself, an attempt to wipe Palestine from human memory. The very definition of genocide ..."

“The long-anticipated Iranian retaliation to the Israeli assassination of Palestinian leader Ismail Haniyeh and Lebanese leader Hassan Nasrallah was more decisive than expected.

Max Blumenthal, The Gray Zone: “Iran targets key Israeli genocide base, the moral equivalent of striking the railways to Auschwitz.”

Ali Abunimah, The Electronic Intifada: “Iran, acting on behalf of humanity, taking out the infrastructure of Zionist terror.”

Susan Abulhawa: "More tha 80 percent of humanity is celebrating right now. It's the joy of the weak and poor and devastated and colonized and exploited. Whatever comes next, we know we can fight back. We are not helpless, despite the overwhelming odds." Thank you for your continuing support

A WORD FROM JEFF

"Mini-Events in West Bank Oppression" I was visiting my friend Ata in what's left of his farmland, a tiny plot opposite the large and violent settlement-city of Kiryat Arba which lies atop his family's land. He still manages to grow some grapes, although the Israeli authorities forbid him to do anything else. (Ata's home has been demolished twice, his family attacked by settlers repeatedly, his well and small farm bulldozed by the Israeli authorities, and he is in poor health following army beatings on his way to a prison term for resisting the demolition of his home.)

STONES CRY OUT IN WASHINGTON DC

Comments by Michael Spath, co-chair, ICAHD-USA *** The Stones Cry Out delegation was in Washington DC from September 23-25. We met with congressional staff persons, raised our voices at the US Capitol, demonstrated with a “die-in” in front of the Democratic National Committee headquarters (led by Eli McCarthy of Christians for Ceasefire), and heard from many voices, including: Reps.Rashida Tlaib and Cori Bush; Josh Paul and Lily Greenberg Call (both resigned from the Biden Administration because of its supplying weapons to Israel); Miko Peled, Josh Ruebner (IMEU), Medea Benjamin (CODEPINK), Laila El-Haddad (The Gaza Mom), Ariel Gold (Fellowship of Reconciliation), and Don Wagner.

Commentary Within Hours of the Strikes

Mondoweiss: "Israel triggered this through its genocide in Gaza, assassinations of Palestinian leaders on Iranian soil, and relentless bombing on Lebanon. Desperate for regional escalation, Israel has pushed forward unchecked by the U.S. For over a year, with U.S. support, Israel has made a mockery of international law, killing tens of thousands of Palestinians, displacing millions in Gaza & Lebanon, and throwing the region into further turmoil."
