In Sheikh Jarrah, a Palestinian neighborhood in East Jerusalem. I'm with an Italian group meeting some of the families threatened with eviction by Israeli settlers, with the backing of the Israeli courts, a key piece of the colonial process. [Accompanyting photos below, April 21.] 1. Here is the patriarch of the al-Kurd family, one of the first refugee families to settle here after the 1967 war. The part of their house you see has been given to settlers by the court, confing the al-Kurd family to the small rooms at the front. The settlers (American Jews) do all they can to make life for the family as miserable as possible - they have vicious guard dogs, play loud music at night, try to intimidate the family and frighten their kids. 2. Look at the surveillance cameras and police monitoring devices installed by the servers on the house across the street that they took over a number of years ago - plus the in-your-face Star of David and Hebrew slogans, common to houses taken over by settlers, announcing the inexorable progress in Judaizing Palestinian neighborhoods in Jerusalem. 3. Nearby is the "office" of Itamar Ben-Gvir, a violent fascist (in the full sense of the term) Knesset member that Netanyahu wanted in his government, set up in front of another Palestinian home taken over by settlers. (See the Hebrew inside & the Israeli flags). 4. Here is an Arabic term of resistance you should all know: sumud, which means "steadfast.' Like tens of thousands of other Palestinian families threatened with eviction or demolition, the al-Kurd family remains sumud in their home all these years. They cannot win in court (and do not have the resources to pursue their case over decades). One of the reasons they remain is the international pressure they and their supporters (including ICAHD) have raised on the Israeli government. In this fourth picture the Italians and their Palestinian hosts gather to sing Bellaciao. 5. Finally, also in Sheikh Jarrah, an unfinished building offering refuge to 30 Palestinian families whose homes have been demolished and have nowhere to go. It's just a shell of a building - no plumbing, no electricity (pirated in from nearby lines), no walls between the family quarters, no glass in the windows. Just raw concrete. These families cannot afford to rent, or buy other homes - 70% of Palestinians in Jerusalem live under the poverty line. Since 1948 Israel has systematically (and "legally") demolished 140,000 Palestinian homes, farms, schools, mosques, community centers and businesses - 60,000 in Israel and the Occupied Territory since 1967. Spread this message and be part of the struggle.
